Why Sewists Still Reach for Beeswax

If you’ve ever had thread tangle, knot, or snag mid-stitch, you’ll understand why a quality thread conditioner is worth having on hand. Used for centuries, beeswax remains one of the most effective and natural ways to prepare thread for hand sewing, embroidery, beading and button work. SOHMO Australian Beeswax is unbleached, untreated and full of character – with each batch naturally varying in colour from soft gold to warm tan, depending on the bees’ forage. The Story Behind SOHMO Go-To Scissors

In 2023, I set out to design a pair of scissors that felt as good in the hand as they performed on fabric. After many sketches, prototypes and conversations with our manufacturer, the SOHMO Go-To Scissors were born - a thoughtfully engineered tool made with makers in mind. The design process was a labour of love. Creating the custom moulds was a significant investment for a small brand like SOHMO, but one I felt strongly about. I wanted to make something that didn’t just work, but worked beautifully, felt intuitive to use and held its place in a modern sewing kit. Can I travel with my sewing scissors?

If you’ve ever been caught mid-project at the airport or wondered whether your sewing scissors will make it through security, you’re not alone. The good news is: yes, you can bring scissors on a plane in Australia, provided they meet a few simple rules. Measuring just 46mm overall, with a 15mm blade, they’re well within the limit and breeze through security screening. Our Matchbox Scissors aren’t just...

Why DO people keep their sewing supplies in a cookie tin?

Nearly ever child has experienced the disappointment of opening a biscuit tin, only to discover mum or grandma has stashed all sorts of sewing supplies in there. But have you ever wondered why every mum or grandma did this? The answer may not be as exciting as you'd hoped - it's likely simply because the tin was often decorative, sturdy and good to repurpose. Biscuit tins, cigar boxes, coffee cans, shoe boxes, and glass jars were all reused. Today, groceries often come in single use plastic that prevents the re-use, and we purchase purpose-made plastic containers to organise. The shape of the cookie tin also made it the preferred tin for storing sewing kits - it is wide and low,...
