New collaboration celebrates the release of Cass Merrigan's latest fabric collection 'Binding Glory'

SOHMO has teamed up with Cass Merrigan, the designer behind Cake & Ale, to create a needle minder celebrating her newest fabric collection with KK Fabrics. It's a small item for a project that's usually anything but small - the design and quote lifted straight from the fabric collection, ready to sit on your quilt while you hand stitch the binding.

A fabric worth immortalising

Sonya Morris, founder of SOHMO, has followed Cass's work for a while, drawn to her dry sense of humour and her knack for turning fabric into amazing three-dimensional English Paper Piecing designs. When Cass's new Binding Glory collection for KK Fabrics was ready for release, the two decided it deserved something special. 

The result is a small enamel needle minder, taking the colours and patterns straight from the fabric collection. The words "hydrate, hibernate, hope for the best" are a fitting reminder for anyone deep into a slow stitching project.

The needle minder is available through SOHMO and SOHMO stockists.

Meet the designer: Cass Merrigan, Cake & Ale

In Cass's own words:

"Why hello there, Possum! I'm Cass, the creative behind the weird and wonderful world of Cake & Ale, where we take the time-honoured craft of English paper piecing and turn it on its head with modern packaging design principles. The result? Quirky, unexpected, and delightfully 3D sewing projects designed to give you a little dopamine hit. I also dabble as a fabric designer because, apparently, I can't leave well enough alone.

So put down the bathing toaster, step away from the doom scrolling, and come discover the wonderfully weird world beyond your social feed. I'd love to stitch something unexpected with you."

Cake & Ale came to be when Cass's professional life collided with her love of all things textile. With close to two decades of experience as a graphic designer for the textiles industry, she felt it was time to put her own unique take on craft out into the world, combining a background in pattern and packaging design with a love of textiles.

Her goal is simple - share the joy of slow sewing and show that sewing isn't a "granny craft." In a world of speed scrolling, Cass creates unique weekend projects that won't break the time bank, giving anyone a reason to unplug for a while. And just like in her design studio, the end goal of any project is to make it not only beautiful, but practical too.
