The blunt-tip needle for cross stitch, needlepoint, and knitting finishing. Three sizes, made in Japan.

Tapestry needles have two distinct features: a blunt, rounded tip that passes between fabric threads rather than splitting them, and a large eye that accommodates thick thread, multiple strands of floss, or yarn without fraying. These two features make them the right tool for any work on open-weave fabric (canvas, aida, evenweave linen) and for any finishing work that requires threading thick yarn through a needle without a point.

SOHMO Tapestry Needles are made in Japan by a manufacturer with over 100 years of needle-making experience. Ten precision processes produce a needle that is consistently smooth, snag-free, and strong. The blunt tip is rounded cleanly, not just ground down - it glides between threads rather than catching on them.

What they're used for:

Cross stitch and work on aida and evenweave - the blunt tip navigates the fabric grid without splitting the weave, keeping stitch lines clean and even.

Long stitch, needlepoint, and tapestry canvas work - the large eye handles multiple strands and wool thread comfortably.

Finishing knitted garments - tapestry needles are the standard tool for seaming knitted pieces and weaving in yarn ends, handling even bulky yarn without snagging. Candlewicking and other decorative thread work on open-weave fabrics.

This tin contains 20 needles across three sizes, loose in the tin rather than mounted on card - a practical assortment for matching needle to fabric count and thread weight:

  • 22 gauge (0.89 × 40.00mm) - 6 needles. The finest in the tin. For finer counts like 18ct or 28ct evenweave and finer threads.
  • 20 gauge (1.07 × 45.50mm) - 7 needles. A versatile mid-size for 14ct aida, standard tapestry canvas, and most cross stitch work.
  • 18 gauge (1.24 × 48.50mm) - 7 needles. The largest in the tin. For coarser canvas counts, chunky wool, and seaming knitted garments.

A note on tapestry needle sizing: higher numbers mean finer needles -22 is finer than 18. The numbers look different from standard sewing needle gauges because tapestry needles are measured on a different scale, but the convention is the same.

Packaged in a compact sliding-lid tin - the same format as all SOHMO needle tins, sized to fit in a project bag, embroidery basket, or sewing box.

Care: Do not leave needles in projects for extended periods. Nickel plating may corrode in humid or coastal environments. Store in a dry place.
