Milliner needles, also known as straw needles, were originally developed for hat makers who needed a long, fine needle that could pass through multiple layers of straw and fabric without bending. That same length and slenderness turns out to be exactly what's needed for a wide range of hand sewing techniques that have nothing to do with hats.
The characteristic that defines a milliner needle is its uniform diameter along the full length of the shaft, unlike sharps or embroidery needles, the shaft doesn't taper toward the eye. This makes them ideal for techniques that involve wrapping thread around the needle: smocking, pleating, hand gathering, and bullion knot embroidery all benefit from a consistent shaft diameter that lets the wraps slide off cleanly. They're also a favourite for hand tacking, basting, and English paper piecing.
