These are crewel needles, the standard for most hand embroidery work: a sharp point paired with a long eye that comfortably fits multiple strands of floss. That long eye is doing most of the work here. It makes threading painless, keeps friction off the thread as it passes through, and lets you stitch with 2, 3, or 4 strands without the eye slowly shredding your floss over the course of a project.
